Arrival to the hotel. Dinner and overnight.
Morning city tour of Zagreb, including the fortified mediaeval Upper Town, St. Mark’s Church, the Cathedral of St. Stephen, the Stone Gate, the Croatian National Theatre and the University. Afternoon drive to Opatija, once the resort of choice for the Habsburgs and European Royalty, as well as personalities from the world of culture, such as Gustav Mahler, Isidora Duncan and A.P. Chekhov. Overnight in Poreč.
This morning we depart for Hum, “the smallest town in the world”, with its walls, Town Loggia on central square and Town Gate. Continuation to Motovun, a picturesque mediaeval fortified town on the hilltop, overlooking a dense chestnut wood. Departure for Beram to visit the church of St. Mary on Škriljine, containing the most famous Croatian Gothic frescoes (Dance Macabre), work of the local painter Vincent of Kastav. Departure to Poreč, visit to Euphrasius Basilica (6th century) with its magnificent mosaics included in the UNESCO’s List of World Cultural Monuments. Overnight in Poreč.
Morning departure for Pula. Sightseeing tour of Pula includes a visit to the Arena (1st century), one of the best preserved Roman Amphitheatres in the world, Triumphal Arch of Sergius, Temple of Augustus and Gate of Hercules. We continue to the National Park of Brijuni Islands, abounding in luxuriant subtropical vegetation and wildlife, with numerous archeological sites, consisting of 14 islands and islets of which we tour Veliki Brijun Island. Continuation to Rovinj, the most picturesque town of Istria, we walk through its narrow cobblestone streets up to the church of St. Euphemia. Return to Poreč for overnight.
Departure for the Pauline Monastery of St. Peter in the Woods (Sv. Petar u Šumi), founded by Benedictines in 12th century, that used to be the cultural centre of this part of Istria. We continue to Pazin, situated in the very heart of Istria, to visit the church of St. Nicolas housing the remarkable frescoes paintings (15th century). We will enjoy the view of the impressive Pazin Cave and Castle, the best preserved mediaeval fortress in Istria, where Jules Verne set a large part of the plot of his novel “Mathias Sandorf”. Departure to Zagreb and overnight.
After breakfast, departure from hotel and beginning of journey home.
